Interview with @Y2KBags

Interview with @Y2KBags

Handbag Social Club had the pleasure of interviewing @Y2KBags about their fabulous Instagram account, which is a fanciful trip down fashion's nostalgia lane. It features so many iconic handbag moments like Jessica Simpson kissing her beloved birthday Birkin 40, Paris Hilton clutching her Chanel Ligne Cambon Tote, a refreshing dose of the Olsen twins and so much more.

In celebration and collaboration, we've teamed up to give you a @Y2KBags Collection, featuring all of @Y2KBags' top picks.

Check out the interview to learn more about @Y2KBags, how it all started and what bags they are currently loving.

What do you love about Y2K style?

Y2K style reminds me of my childhood and takes me back to the nostalgia of it all. Growing up, I was obsessed with trashy magazines and fashion magazines. Seeing all the "it" girls wear the most obnoxiously fabulous designer stuff was such a major moment for me. The Y2K style will live forever and will always make a major comeback because how could you not love the fashion and that era?

What made you start the account?

I always said I wanted to create something that would feel like a community within the world of fashion. Last year, while I was bored at home, I went on Instagram and pulled up an account that I had started in 2019 but did nothing with. I updated the handle and typed in 'y2kbags,' thinking there's no way this isn't taken. And here we are today! It was kismet.

Who are your style icons?

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen! Their style evolution and influence have been phenomenal. They went from having custom designer clothing tailored to fit them in their tweens to creating their stealth luxury brand, 'The Row.' I also think back to what people were wearing in the early 2000s, before all the logos. Posh Spice and David Beckham in the early 2000s were also a dynamic duo I look back to for inspiration, during their cargo pants and neutral colors era.

What made you choose the bags in the Y2K collection?

These bags represent a subtle representation of the y2k era. For example, the Gucci GG Canvas Sukey bag gained fame when Snooki from the Jersey Shore carried it during a trying time. The Multicolore Pochette Accessoires was carried by an array of IT Girls during the early 2000s, along with the print itself. Everything else exudes nostalgia, chicness, effortlessness, and is simply MAJOR, as Victoria 'Posh' Beckham would say.

What is your favorite bag in the Y2K collection and why?

The Louis Vuitton Multicolore Pochette Accessoires, a collaboration between the maison and Takashi Murakami during Marc Jacobs' tenure at the house, has to be my favorite. It's a silhouette that will never go out of style, and it's a bag that can be dressed up or down! It's a great investment piece that will hold its value for years to come.

What bag are you currently wearing?

I've been torn between my Vert 2001 Birkin 35, which was Margiela's last year at Hermes, and an array of Mombasa bags that I have been hoarding for quite some time now! The Mombasa was a bag designed by Tom Ford during his tenure at Yves Saint Laurent.

What is your dream bag?

I would love to get my hands on a Kelly Pochette, a bag designed by Jean Paul Gaultier during his tenure at Hermes. Ideally, I would love a jewel-toned, shiny alligator or lizard version. However, I will absolutely settle for any color in leather!
